KIRSTEN LAULAINEN is a Staff Editor for Barking Rain Press. She has been in love with words and writing from a young age, when books such as The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis turned her into a reading fanatic. At Syth Baker Robles Publishing, Kirsten edited speculative fiction novels, and has also worked as a freelance editor and story coach for YA Fantasy and middle grade fiction. She has written articles for dog lovers about canine care, training, diet, and prevention of behavioral issues. As an intern at the Oregon Zoo, Ms. Laulainen wrote educational articles, and she has also penned short stories and poetry, which have been published at online magazines and websites. Kirsten holds a BA in English from the University of Washington in Seattle and currently lives in Bend, Oregon.

MIRANDA RABUCK is a Staff Editor for Barking Rain Press. Miranda is a writer, editor, and barista currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Book Publishing at Portland State University. She enjoys designing books as well as editing them, and is interested in both digital books and letterpress printing. She hopes to use her degree toward opening a non-profit press that specializes in teaching at-risk youth to create their own hand-made books. Miranda’s favorite book is Frankenstein, and her favorite authors range from Thomas Pynchon to Toni Morrison. Barking Rain Press is Added to the ITW Recognized Publisher List
Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced that it has been added to the International Thriller Writers (ITW) list of recognized publishers. The ITW qualifies publishers for inclusion on this list by verifying that they do not contractually obligate their authors to pay for such services as advertising, sales, marketing, editing, or promotion of their books. Authors who have works published by an ITW recognized publisher are eligible to become members of the ITW.

The UK Guardian posted an article in response to The Society of Authors petition to culture minister Ed Vaizey to address concerns that library e-lending is “undervaluing retail pricing” and encouraging piracy. The writers’ union says it remains “strongly of the view that remote lending of ebooks is not an essential or primary role of an efficient library service”.

Natalie Podgorski of station NWCN in Boise, Idaho covered how the Boise Library’s new program allows cardholders to check out, and start reading books without ever leaving their homes. Anyone with a Boise Library card, an Internet connection, and a computer can instantly access thousands of eBooks.
“Depending on what you like to do, if you like to listen or if you like to exercise, audio books are great,” said electronic resource librarian Lindsay Zamara. “Regular just text books are also really popular too, so we have a little mix of everything.”
